Wastewater Quality of a Grease Separator

  • It’s important to monitor the outlet of grease separators to ensure proper wastewater quality.
  • Proof of compliance, with limit values and full transparency over sewage quantities discharging, is a requirement in most municipalities.
  • Automatic process monitoring by combining measurement of pH, conductivity, and flow rate can help operators ensure suitable wastewater quality.

Kesselhut Entsorgungs GmbH specializes in the inspection and cleaning of pipe and sewer systems, roads, and industrial plants. Services from the municipal provider also includes disposing human waste, oil, and grease separation. In the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the company operates a plant for the separation of grease. The site feeds with industrial wastewater so monitoring wastewater quality is critical.

Measurement Requirements for Monitoring Wastewater Quality

The operation of grease separators is subject to strict technical and environmental regulations. Wastewater downstream of the grease separator discharges into the municipal sewage network. Then, the customer reports the discharge to the local wastewater association. The authority monitors compliance with the permissible limit values mainly by way of pH and conductivity. To comply with regulations, Kesselhut must submit these parameters to the wastewater association on a regular basis.

This compliance implies continuous monitoring of the effluent downstream of the grease separator using suitable process instrumentation. The customer looks for a partner who can further automate the process and increase process reliability. In addition to the measurement technology, they also need a provider of technical consulting and service support.

Wastewater Flow and Process Analytics Instrumentation

For limit value monitoring, KROHNE supplies analytical sensors and flow meters that cater to the customer’s needs. For pH measurement, the OPTISENS PH 8300 is suitable. Designed for wastewater applications, its glass sensor features a robust, dirt-repellent PTFE ring diaphragm. It also features an integrated temperature sensor. The pH sensor installs into a U section using the SENSOFIT IMM 1000 immersion assembly.

For inductive conductivity measurement, the customer uses the OPTISENS IND 1000 with polypropylene (PP) sensor body. The compact inductive conductivity sensor for industrial wastewater also has a non-wetted Pt1000 for temperature compensation. For this application, the OPTISENS IND 1000 features an immersion holder to firmly attach.

Both analytical sensors offer the 2-channel MAC 100 analytical transmitter. Furthermore, only one single transmitter is necessary to transmit both the pH and the conductivity readings to the control room. The MAC 100 is a panel-mount version, allowing for a flexible installation on the wall regardless of the transmitter’s dimensions.

To accurately monitor the sewage quantity, the client also installs the OPTIFLUX  4300. Thanks to its PU liner, this electromagnetic flow meter, or magmeter, is ideally suitable for measuring even heavily contaminated wastewater. With a patent “virtual reference” for the device, there is no need to apply a conventional grounding method, which requires additional grounding rings. This flow meter is a remote version with field-mounted (F) signal converter.

KROHNE Flow Meters and Analytical Instrumentation

The customer benefits from this custom solution which, in addition to pH and conductivity, also automates the recording and evaluation of data on wastewater quantities in the control room. This enables Kesselhut to provide precise evidence of wastewater that discharges to the sewer system. As a result, the customer can use the balancing in their billing practice with the wastewater association.

The process instrumentation also provides complete proof that they adhere to all limit values. In case of strongly deviating readings, the disposal company can take countermeasures in time to resolve any issues. In this way, the company avoids contamination of the sewage system and unnecessary surcharges from the water authority.
