PR 3118 Bipolar Isolated Converter / Splitter

Enhance signal clarity and safety with the PR 3118 Bipolar Isolated Converter/Splitter. It converts ± voltage or current signals into dual unipolar outputs, isolates against transients, and ensures accurate signal integrity. With over‑voltage, short‑circuit, and polarity protection, it adapts to harsh environments. Certified for marine and hazardous zones, this unit mounts densely on standard DIN rails thanks to its slim 6.1 mm design. Get fast <7 ms response, excellent EMC compliance and low noise even under demanding conditions.

  • Dual unipolar outputs from one bipolar input – great for redundancy and monitoring
  • High isolation (2.5 kVAC), surge protection, and accurate conversion (better than 0.05%)
  • Slim housing, high channel density, and compatibility with hazardous/marine approvals

Description

The PR 3118 Bipolar Isolated Converter/Splitter converts bipolar current or voltage analog signals into two separate unipolar signals while maintaining high isolation. It supports bipolar input ranges ±10 mA or ±20 mA plus voltage ranges ±5 V or ±10 V, and splits the signal into two independent outputs. Moreover, the PR 3118, from PR electronics, offers high galvanic isolation (2.5 kVAC test), floating input/output terminals, surge‑suppression, over‑voltage, polarity, and short‑circuit protection.

  • Conversion of voltage and current bipolar process signals to unipolar as well as bipolar signals
  • Multiple signal ranges are selectable via DIP-switches
  • Splitter function: 1 signal in and also 2 signals out
  • Excellent accuracy, better than 0.05 % of selected range in addition to high output load stability
  • Easy configuration of factory calibrated measurement ranges via DIP-switches
  • A very low power consumption allows DIN-rail mounting without the need for any air gap
  • Wide temperature operation range: -13 to 158˚F (-25 to 70˚C)

PR 3118 Bipolar Isolated Converter / Splitter

Its response time remains under 7 ms, with excellent signal‑to‑noise ratio (>60 dB) and EMC immunity meeting NAMUR NE21 standards. The PR 3118 Isolated Converter and Splitter supplies from 24 VDC (±30%) and offers a compact design, fitting into slim 6.1 mm housing, thus enabling up to 163 modules per meter on DIN-rails. Also, it operates in ambient temperatures from ‑13 to 158˚F (-25 to 70˚C).

  • The PR 3118 is an isolating converter and splitter that is ideal for signal conversion of standard bipolar analog process signals into two individual unipolar analog signals.
  • It offers 4-port isolation, provides surge suppression, and also protects control systems from transients and noise.
  • In addition, the 3118 eliminates ground loops and is suitable for measuring floating signals.
  • Mounting of the PR 3118 can be in a Safe area or in Zone 2 and Cl. 1 Div 2 area and has approval for marine applications.
  • The analog output can easily configure and program to be bipolar in the ranges ±10 mA and ±20 mA (*special setup).

Technical Characteristics

  • Flexible 24 VDC (±30%) supply via power rail or connectors.
  • Excellent conversion accuracy, better than 0.05% of selected range.
  • A green front LED indicates operation status for the device.
  • All terminals feature protection against over-voltage and polarity error.
  • Meeting the NAMUR NE21 recommendations, the PR 3118 ensures top measurement performance in harsh EMC environments.
  • High galvanic isolation of 2.5 kVAC.
  • Fast input to output response time < 7 ms / > 100 Hz – 10 Hz bandwidth damping possible via DIP-switch.
  • Excellent signal/noise ratio > 60 dB.

Applications

  • In process control systems where bipolar sensors feed into PLCs or a DCS, needing unipolar outputs for split monitoring.
  • In marine as well as hazardous Zone 2 / Division 2 areas, where safety approvals are a requirement.
  • For isolating and splitting signals in chemical, oil & gas, and water treatment facilities to prevent noise and ground‑loop interference.
  • For retrofits where limited panel space demands high channel density with reliable signal processing.
