Non-Clogging Submersible Pressure Transducer For Wastewater Lift Stations

Non-Clogging Submersible Pressure Transducer For Wastewater Lift Stations

Wastewater lift stations, or pumping stations, are an integral part in the transportation and eventual treatment of wastewater and other water streams. Wastewater commonly flows through piping systems, using gravity to move the water from one location to another. Using gravity helps keep costs down during transportation. However, gravity cannot be used when the wastewater needs to be transported to a higher elevation. This is where lift stations come in. And our submersible pressure transducers are ideal for the harsh, remote requirements.

Components of Lift Stations for Wastewater Treatment

There are three main components of a lift station:

  • Wet Well – This is a single, underground tank where wastewater is held until it is ready for pumping (or lifting) to the higher elevation piping system.
  • Submersible Pump – A submersible pump is at the bottom of the wet well. Its job is to pump the wastewater out of the wet well when necessary.
  • Submersible Pressure Transducer – A submersible pressure transducer is also at the bottom of the wet well and connects to a control system at the top of the well. Its job is to continuously monitor the level of the wastewater in the well. Users are able to preset, via the control system, the maximum allowable level in the well before automatically activating the pump on and emptying the well. The pressure transducer will continue to monitor during the pumping process. Last, the pump will automatically turn off when the pressure transducer indicates that the level has reached the preset low level.

CS15 Non-Clogging Submersible Pressure Transducer

We offer the CS15 Non-Clogging Submersible Pressure Transducer from Core Sensors. Its design specifically meets the harsh demands of the wastewater industry.

Features include:

  • IP68 rating
  • flush diaphragm to prevent solids from clogging the pressure port
  • heavy duty steel cage (birdcage) to help weigh the sensor to the bottom of the well/tank as well as acting as a barrier between the solids and the flush diaphragm
  • 316L SS diaphragm / 304 SS cage, housing and 1/2″ MNPT conduit

Level Control – How It Works

For example, let’s assume that the CS15 Non-Clogging Submersible Pressure Transducer has a 0-10 PSI pressure range and a 4-20mA output signal. The installer of this lift station wants the wastewater level to never get higher than 9 PSI (~20.75 feet of water) and no lower than 3.5 PSI (~8 feet of water). The installer would simply indicate these setpoints on the control system of the lift station. With these parameters set, the CS15 pressure transducer would operate as follows:

  • The CS15 submersible pressure transducer will continuously monitor the level in the wet well and transmit the linear output signal to the control panel.
  • When the sensor measures 9 PSI, or ~18.4mA, the control panel can initiate the submersible pump to turn on. This will start lifting the wastewater out of the outlet pipe of the wet well and further along the piping system.
  • As the sensor’s pressure measurement drops to 3.5 PSI, or ~9.6mA, the control panel will turn off the submersible pump. This will end the pump out procedure.

Submersible Pressure Transmitters

Operators can configure the CS15 to suit specific installation requirements.

  • Low power output options are available. We offer a 0.5-2.5 V non-ratiometric output signal that will operate off of an unregulated 3-5 VDC power supply. This option is excellent for remote lift station applications. Lift stations are typically continuously monitoring the level in the well. Operators will need to consider battery life or the viability of solar power when selecting this output signal.
  • Customers can select the pressure range of the sensor. We offer ranges from 2 to 50 PSI. Only need 0-20 PSI? No problem! We can custom calibrate just about any pressure range requirement.
  • While the cable run is commonly short in lift station applications, we offer many different cable lengths options. 16 meters is the standard length for the CS15, however longer lengths are available.
  • Hastelloy C276 diaphragms are available for applications that require higher corrosion resistance.
